Concrete for a seismic region

The Almaty region is a seismically active zone. Here is the honest breakdown: what actually determines whether a building stands, what a concrete supplier is and is not responsible for, and how to verify that the class you ordered is the class that arrived.

This is not hypothetical

Almaty and the surrounding districts sit in a 9-point seismic zone, with parts of the city assessed at 9–10 points. The city has been destroyed by earthquakes twice — that is documented history, not a forecast.

About the tremors of December 2025

On 4 December 2025 Almaty felt tremors from a magnitude 6.7 earthquake whose epicentre lay 277 km south-east of the city. The intensity in Almaty was around 3 points; there was no damage and there were no casualties. We are not building a marketing campaign on it: nothing collapsed, and claiming credit would be dishonest. But after news like that clients ask "will my building hold?" more often — and it is a fair question.

What determines seismic resistance

How a building behaves in an earthquake comes down to five things. Concrete is one of them. A structure built with M400 and a flawed joint will fail; one built with M250 and a sound design will not.

Structural analysis and layout

How the building distributes lateral loads: stiffness, symmetry, the absence of soft storeys. Around 80% of the outcome is decided here.

Reinforcement and joints

Bar diameter, spacing, anchorage, column-to-beam joint detailing. This is where real failures most often occur in an earthquake.

Where our responsibility begins and ends

We supply ready-mix concrete; we are not a design office. We cannot and will not promise that a building will stand — that depends on factors outside our control. Here is what we can guarantee:

What we are responsible for

  • The delivered concrete class matches what you ordered — verifiable by testing control specimens.
  • Weight control on every batch; the weighbridge calibration is backed by a certificate.
  • GOST-compliant production under valid certificates of conformity for concrete and mortars.
  • Accurate batching on modern equipment — a consistent mix from load to load.
  • Aggregate: category 1 crushed stone of the 5×20 fraction and washed sand.

What we are not responsible for

  • The concrete class for your project is specified by the design, not by the supplier.
  • Structural analysis for seismic loads — the work of a licensed designer.
  • Reinforcement layout and joint detailing.
  • Placing, compaction and curing of concrete on site.

Construction in seismic areas of Kazakhstan is governed by SP RK 2.03-30-2017 "Construction in Seismic Zones". The concrete class for any given element is specified by the design in accordance with that document — tell us the design class and we will supply it.

How to verify what was delivered

Under-delivering on grade is a genuine problem in this market, and the defence is a procedure, not trust in the seller. This works with any plant, ours included.

Take control specimens

On site, from the mixer, with a plant representative present. Standard 100×100 or 150×150 mm cubes.

Test at 28 days

Concrete gains its design strength over 28 days. A 7-day result is an indication, not a verdict.

Demand batch documentation

A quality passport for every batch and a delivery note stating the class, volume and dispatch time.

Check the time in transit

Concrete must be placed before it begins to set. The dispatch time on the delivery note is your control.

Tell us the class from your drawings — we'll supply it

Send us the grade and volume from your design documentation. We'll schedule deliveries around your pour, issue a passport for every batch and arrange the sampling of control specimens.
